My Life Felt Impossible too

Hi, my name is James Anthony

After teaching in 'difficult schools' for 20 years, and experiencing relationship and family problems as a young adult ... 

... I found myself suffering from mental health issues in my 40s.

This caught me by surprise. Although I carried some problems with me from childhood, I was previously able to be happy in my life and resilient at work.

But as the stress of my job (and my life) increased - depression and anxiety crept up on me. 

After realising I couldn't cope with this alone, I was prescribed antidepressants, counselling and CBT.

But, despite my doctor's support, I continued to struggle with negative thought and depression.


The effect this had on my life was profound 

  • The positive and happy person I was, disappeared.
  • My relationship began to fail.
  • I was passed over for several promotions as I struggled to cope with my job.
  • I started feeling anxious and panicked for no reason.  
  • And I stopped trying to solve the problems I had.

I had given up inside. 

I began to think that the torrent of negative thoughts I lived with each day - were a part of me that I would have to accept forever. 

But my worst moment came when I became a father ...

... and realised the impact my mental health issues were having on my ability to be a happy dad.

The angry and depressed man that my little girl was getting to know wasn't me. 


As I searched for solutions, I stumbled across someone who taught me a new way to manage my negative thoughts. 

Over time, as I learned more about the way my mind REALLY works ... I recovered my confidence and love of life. 

I left my stressful teaching job, and started a business which I run around my family life.

I resolved my relationship and families issues - leaving me free of a weight I had carried all my adult life.

And most importantly, I am able to be a happy father to my wonderful daughter.

I now put my life experience to good use helping teachers feeling what I did, a few years ago.


But I could not have made this journey without realising one simple thing

Let me explain ...

There is a BIG problem with how you think ...

We are taught many ways to look after our health - from what to eat, how to exercise, stay safe (etc.) 

But most of us lack an understanding of how our most important organ (our brain) really works.

We are shown how to be creative - how to remember things - or solve problems ...

But we understand very little about how our brains can work against us - particularly as we age.

Because as we live through stressful jobs, broken relationships, and experience failure and rejection ...

... the damage adds up.

  • We start to ruminate over our past mistakes 
  • We get more anxious and experience a greater fear of the future
  • Our thoughts tell us 'we can't do this', or 'should be doing that'
  • We compare ourselves negatively to others
  • And we tell ourselves stories of the person we could have been ...

These thoughts often trigger emotional responses, setting off trains of negative thought - about ourselves, and what we believe we are worth.

We live reacting to these thoughts and the feelings they create.

Never completely in control ... any moment a trigger can strike us, leaving us reacting in the way we always have to something we experienced in the past.  

These negative thoughts become the background noise to our lives.

They affect how we feel, and our ability to rise to the challenges of our jobs and family lives.

And they result in mental health issues like depression, anxiety and low self-esteem.


You are probably not fully aware of how often your mind feeds you thoughts you don't need ...

... and the HUGE impact that this has on your health, happiness and potential.


We fall into the Reactive Thinking Trap ...

The Reactive Thinking Trap

As mental health problems develop. success and happiness become much more difficult to achieve ... 

We can't live up to the potential we have, we miss opportunities for happiness. 


The 'mental noise' becomes impossible to ignore.

It can feel like the negative voice in your head is you.

So we start to feel depressed, get anxious about things ... and lose the happy person we used to be.

We miss the opportunities for happiness which life throws us. 

And we become the person our negative thoughts tell us we are. 


The Usual Solution is Counselling or CBT

The solution which is often recommended to these kinds of mental health issues are talking therapies ...

... where we are often encouraged to understand and document our thoughts.

Often this is done in an attempt to disprove them.

Over time this is supposed to persuade our brains that they are wrong, and that as a result, they will stop thinking this way.

The problem with this approach is that it misunderstands the way our brains work. 

Let me explain ... 


How Your Brain REALLY Works ...

Our brains work by association - one thought sets off another.

From your earliest years you have trained your brain to think this way ...

... when we try solving problems, or when we are being creative. And all through your schooling where you were trained to recall knowledge at will. 

Our brains have been trained to follow trains of thought to the conclusions we want to reach - to experiment with thoughts until we reach a solution. 

This is all usually done through association.

The problem with the approach of most talking therapies, is that by recognising and responding to the negative thoughts we have - we train our brains that the association which created them is important .. and should be repeated.

As a result, many patients in talking therapy experience an escalating battle between their negative thought patterns and their strength to counteract every one. 

Some days we are strong enough to do so happily - others feel like a battle we are never going to win. 

Too many people resort to medication (or self medication) to deal with the result. 

This fundamental misconception XXXXX




The Misconception is this ... 

You can't 'think away' a problem which is caused by you thinking too much. You will only make it worse.

You can't rationalise your way out of depression, or negative thought.

Treating mental health issues this way often simply makes them worse - by 'rewarding' the brain by reacting to thoughts you would rather not have.

Remember - your brain is a dog. 

Only give it a biscuit when it behaves!


You might be able to lift yourself occasionally by reflecting on the good things that happen - you might be able to make shift the needle a little some days .. but the undercurrent of feelings are likely to keep returning until you change one simple thing.

You can't just explain things to your mind, and persuade it to rewind to the happy person you used to be. 

The negative thought patterns that have run around your head have become so ingrained - they don't just disappear.

We often make things more complicated than they need to be. 

Happily this is the case with negative thoughts, and many mental health issues. 

What you are missing is a knowledge of how to help yourself ...
